#202 Aiket Castle
Near Dunlop, Ayrshire, Scotland
Early 16th century + many additions
This is NOT an official Lego site

Aiket Castle began at the beginning of the 16th century as a rectangular tower of four stories, built by the Cunningham(e)s on family land.  Not long thereafter a similar rectangular addition was added. The new three story addition featured a bartizan with a conical roof, at the NW corner.  In the 17th century the main entrance was lowered to the ground level, and a stone staircase built to access the main floor. Upper levels were reached by a stair tower, corbelled out at the first floor level.  The narrowness of the castle (just 24 feet) left fairly small rooms, and the castle apparently never featured a parapet

The quiet beginnings ended in the second half of the 16th century when a Lady Aiket poisoned her obnoxious husband, then disappeared before her trial for murder.  And Cunningham(e)s tendencies to get involved in various feuds came to a head in 1586 when Alexander of Aiket took part in the murder of Hugh Montgomery, the 4th Earl of Edlington.  The Montgomery kinsmen shot Alexander dead and torched Aiket Castle. Aiket was repaired by the family, and first of many additions added at that time.  In about 1707 the family fell on hard times, and the castle was sold to the Dunlop family, who reduced the original tower to three stories to match the addition. For a time the castle housed farm laborers. A fire in 1957 caused major damage and abandonment of the tower, which was purchased in 1976 by the Clow family.  They lovingly restored the castle beginning in 1979, attempting to restore the original design as far as was known.  The castle is now a private residence, and not open to the public.

My interpretation of what the
ground floor plan might have looked
like - no actual plan found...

Under Construction March 2026
The castle is laid on on March 12,...
...with gross landscaping...
...and much of the ground floor...
...completed that same day.
I've changed ground level windows...

...into typical slit windows to reflect
the dangers of the time.
The next day the first floor...
...is completed. The postern
is plainer than the current one.
March 15 sees the second
floor completed...

...with the postern (now garden)
door and spiral staircase.

And later that day, the
addition is partially roofed...
...and the third floor windows
delineated.  More below!

Here is the completed
castle from the north.

The northwest view
shows off the bartizan.
The west view is
virtually windowless.
The interesting view
from the southwest.
From the south, the spiral
staircase is most prominent.

The view from the
southeast.
The east view of this
narrow tower house.
And we finish with
the northeast view.
